Material handling

Lift Table Buying Guide: Capacity, Travel, Platform & Duty Cycle

Factory EquipmentUpdated 2 min read

THE SHORT ANSWER

Select a material lift table by load characteristics, platform size, lowered and raised heights, duty cycle and the loading method. A material lift table is not automatically approved to lift personnel.

Describe the load and transfer method

Record the load weight, dimensions, orientation and how it reaches the table. The way a pallet, fixture or irregular assembly rests on the platform matters. Ask the supplier to review concentrated, off-center or changing loads rather than relying only on a headline capacity.

Describe the transfer into the next operation. The required raised height may be driven by a conveyor or workstation, while the lowered height may be driven by pallet loading or available floor space. Include both endpoints.

Compare the mechanism and available utilities

Hydraulic, electric-powered and pneumatic configurations need model-specific review. Hydraulic describes an operating mechanism; electric can describe the power source, so these labels are not mutually exclusive. Confirm utilities, controls and the configuration offered for the quoted model.

Plan installation and service access

Specify cycles per shift, hold time, expected load variation and the work environment. Identify pinch-point controls, maintenance access and any proposed pit or floor installation for supplier and site review. A low-profile design still needs a suitable loading and positioning arrangement.

Your request checklist

  • Load weight, dimensions and distribution
  • Platform size and attachment requirements
  • Lowered height, raised height and travel
  • Cycles per shift and available power
  • Loading method and installation constraints

Common questions

Can a lift table be used as a personnel lift?

Only equipment specifically designed and approved for personnel use should be considered for that purpose. Do not assume a material table is suitable because its platform is large.

Are hydraulic and electric lift tables opposites?

Not necessarily. An electric motor can power a hydraulic system. Compare the actual mechanism, power supply and controls specified for the model.
